The Village Silversmith

The Village Silversmith is the work of husband-and-wife jewelry makers Jerry and Margi Smith.

We have been making jewelry for a long time, although we came to it by very different paths and still make very different things.

Jerry has worked at the silversmith’s bench for about fifteen years, creating jewelry primarily from recycled sterling silver and stone. His work tends toward simple forms, substantial silver, texture and the marks left by hand tools. Much of the silver is melted, rolled, hammered, soldered and finished one piece at a time at his bench.

Margi has been making jewelry since around 2008. Her work begins with color. She combines glass, stone, beads, metal and unexpected components into necklaces, earrings and other pieces that are distinctly her own. Where Jerry may spend an afternoon hammering a piece of silver, Margi is just as likely to spend it finding exactly the right combination of color, shape and texture.

Our work is different, and we like it that way.

What connects our work is that we make it ourselves. We choose the materials, make the pieces, take them to shows, put them in our little shop, and stand behind what we sell.

Jerry’s silversmithing carries the GE Smith Design maker’s mark. Margi’s jewelry is presented as Margaret’s Collection.

We aren’t trying to make jewelry for everyone. We make things we find interesting and beautiful, and hope that now and then someone looks at a piece and thinks:
